Infrastructure and traffic tools in Transport Fever 3
Road junctions are modular, stations are modular, traffic lights can skip empty phases, and track is speed-rated. Signals stay deliberately simple and a full timetable system is not in the base game.

Infrastructure is where Transport Fever 3 changes the most at street level, and also where it deliberately holds back.
Roads and junctions
Road construction tools are more flexible, and junctions can be modified after they are built. Lane management is part of the toolkit, including noise-reducing infrastructure that keeps a busy road from hurting the district next to it.
Smart traffic lights
Every traffic light phase can be configured to skip when nothing is waiting. That includes pedestrian phases, so a crossing does not stop traffic for nobody. It is a small setting with a large effect on throughput at busy junctions.
Linking lights in sequence is not supported. If you were hoping for green waves, that will need a mod.

The signal decision is deliberate. A producer explained that comprehensive signal images, coupled pre-signals and country-specific systems would be too complicated for a large part of the audience. Several mods that add exactly that were already in progress before launch, and some sit inside the curated mod programme.
Stations
Stations are modular now. Instead of picking from a fixed list of shapes, you assemble the pieces you need. Combined with underground tram construction, that opens layouts the earlier games could not express.
Every station has specialist add-on buildings. They extend the station's reach, raise passenger comfort, or add capacity. The official infrastructure video is explicit that happy passengers are what makes a town a desirable place to live, so station comfort is a growth lever rather than decoration.
Three track types instead of one best answer
Rail now has three distinct track types rated by speed. The faster the track, the more pollution it produces and the more it costs to maintain. The studio's own framing is that there is no such thing as the best track choice any more. You match the track to the service.

Traffic and junctions
- Cars change lanes and overtake slow vehicles when it gets them there faster
- Junctions can intersect at any angle, so you can build realistic layouts or deliberately hostile ones
- Full lane controls let you decide which path traffic follows
- Demolishing a road restores the natural environment, putting trees and terrain back
Trams, light rail and going underground
Tram tools were rebuilt rather than tweaked. You can extend or reposition tram tracks to use whichever lane keeps a service moving, and both pedestrian crossings and traffic lights can be moved after they are placed.
Two bigger changes sit underneath that. Trams can be taken underground, which removes their noise and pollution from a district while keeping the passenger capacity. And trams can switch to light rail, running independent of roads and connecting into the conventional rail network, which lets you build hybrid services.
Maintenance was rebuilt
Any vehicle that is not adequately maintained loses top speed, power and comfort rating, and gains noise and pollution. Those penalties stack, which is why a neglected fleet can quietly wreck a district's growth.

The waypointing system was upgraded to help. Surface vehicles can be sent off their most direct route so they pass through a maintenance building, and aircraft flight paths can be edited per flight so you can route planes away from residential areas.

Noise and pollution have specific tools
- Noise barriers cut the sound reaching residential areas
- Tree-lined avenues reduce pollution
- Taking a tram underground removes both from the surface entirely
- Routing aircraft away from housing avoids the loudest single source
One request that did not make it
A viewer asked for a distance readout while laying track, so passing loops could be sized to the maximum train length instead of estimated. It was not in the build shown at Gamescom. The producer thought it was a good idea and passed it on, but nothing has been promised.
FAQ
Are there timetables in Transport Fever 3?
Not in the base game. You can set waiting conditions and maximum wait times. A timetable mod from the same author who made the Transport Fever 2 version is scheduled for release.
Can one vehicle serve several lines automatically?
No. Lines and vehicle assignments are easier to edit, but automatic multi-line operation is not included.
Do traffic lights adapt to traffic?
Yes. Each phase can be set to skip if nothing is waiting. That also works for pedestrian phases.
Can traffic lights be linked to each other?
No. Urban Games said linking one set of lights to another further down the street is very difficult to implement and is not in the game.
