What the developers said about performance

Two details from Gamescom are worth more than any synthetic benchmark. First, the demo machines ran RTX 5070 cards. Second, a producer said the team put the game on a GTX 960 at low settings on a large map and still saw around 20 FPS.

The GTX 1060 minimum therefore looks conservative rather than optimistic. That is unusual, and it follows from how the engine works: Transport Fever 3 simulates every resident, vehicle and pedestrian individually, so the load scales with what you build rather than with a fixed scene.

Every sim in the world is calculated. A small map runs well on modest hardware. A map filled with cities and traffic will tax a high-end machine eventually. That is the developers' own description, not a guess.

Why map size drives the frame rate

A developer gave a concrete example during a hands-on session: doubling a 2x2 map to 4x4 takes the area from 4 to 16 units, and the processing cost climbs far faster than the area does. That is the reason there is no enormous map option at launch, and the reason a big city build is the real stress test rather than the graphics settings.

Practical advice before you buy

  • If your GPU sits below a GTX 1060, wait for benchmarks rather than trusting the GTX 960 anecdote.
  • Plan for an SSD. The simulation streams a lot of state and a mechanical drive will show up in loading times.
  • 16 GB of RAM is the comfortable target. 8 GB is the floor, and the game holds a large amount of simulation state.
  • On Mac, the game runs natively. Apple Silicon is the safer bet than an older Intel Mac.

We will replace this page with measured frame rates once the game is out and we can test it on real hardware.

FAQ

Can I run Transport Fever 3 on a GTX 960?

Urban Games started the game on a GTX 960 during testing and got roughly 20 FPS on a large map with low settings. That is below the stated minimum, so treat it as an experiment rather than a supported configuration.

Does Transport Fever 3 use multiple CPU cores?

Yes. The team says core distribution was improved compared with Transport Fever 2, but one core still handles the top-level calculation and synchronisation, so load does not spread evenly across unlimited cores.

Will Transport Fever 3 run on Steam Deck?

Not confirmed. The game supports Linux, which helps, but Valve has not issued a Steam Deck compatibility rating and Urban Games has not commented on it.
